Geomorphosis
A Grjótagjá Experience - Iceland Cave Tower - Competition Submission
Iceland is an island forged by the power of the Earth. Over eons water, ice, wind, lava and plate tectonics have sculpted the landscape. These processes have combined to create the unique geomorphology of the Mývatn plateau. Specifically they have created the Grjótagjá cave system with its rift formation and hotspring caves. Geomorphosis is inspired by the these geologic forms. Igneous Rocks, Basalt Pillars, and Tectonic Rifts have morphed into architectural elements. It is an architecture that is respectful of the land and suited to its unique location.
With its rugged terrain and hot springs, this region is seeing increased tourism. The site is laid out to protect fragile features while allowing increased public access to this beautiful site. The proposed interventions at the Grjótagjá site are laid out to enhance the visitor experience and to encourage people to explore this magnificent site, beyond the caves. The Visitor Center and site elements are situated to screen the caves and rift from guests upon arrival, allowing the visitor experience to unfold as people make their way through the site. These are constructed in areas already disturbed by human intervention. These are earth sheltered elements that are covered with native grasses and wild flowers in an act of site regeneration. On the plateau above the Grjótagjá Rift, additional visitor experiences are proposed including Guest Huts and the Observation Tower. These elements feature durable corten steel cladding and with tubular steel structural frames with minimal foundation systems.
